Why Impacted Wisdom Teeth Taken Out

By Stewart Charchuk

The main reason a person will be recommended to have their wisdom teeth removed is the presence of an impaction. These large back molars usually come through when a person is between the ages of sixteen and twenty five years of age. There are several different types of impaction, some of which are more serious than others.

As problems with the wisdom teeth are so common it is very important to schedule regular visits to the dentist. They will be able to keep an eye on the general health of the mouth and gums and advise on proper brushing, flossing and the use of a good mouth wash. It is far better to be vigilant and detect problems early that to wait and hope that they will resolve themselves.

Most dentists will advise the patient to schedule wisdom teeth removal if they see any type of problem with the molars. It is much better to deal with an impaction early before the tooth becomes hardened into the jaw bone. The surgery is difficult and is often made even more tricky if the patient waits too long. Impaction problems will not get better on their own and will need treatment sooner or later.

Bad breathe is a serious problem. Not only does it indicate a problem with oral hygiene, it is also a significant social stigma. A teenager who has persistent breathe problems will be self conscious and may become with drawn. They will be embarrassed and ashamed and this leads to other self esteem issues. Getting good dental care is vital.

It is interesting that one tooth may grow in crooked whilst the rest do not present a problem. Regular check ups are very important to detect problems early. The dentist will take X rays to see how the teeth are coming through and can often detect a problem very early. Should something be wrong it is important to seek treatment right away and meet with a highly experienced oral surgeon.

There are other reasons why a dentist may recommend wisdom teeth be removed. If a tooth is not fully erupted a flap of skin can be left on the surface. This makes it very difficult, if not impossible to keep the area clean and free of food debris. In these cases the patient will suffer from constant bad breathe and even more serious problems. Infections can start that are very difficult to treat and can cause severe pain.

When a wisdom tooth fails to erupt properly there is a danger that a flap of skin will partially cover the tooth surface. This makes it practically impossible to keep the area clean and will lead to many problems. The patient will suffer from bad breathe because of food particles becoming stuck in the gums. Eventually, this will lead to infections that can be extremely dangerous. Any tooth in this situation should be removed to prevent problems from developing.

The best policy is to deal with any impacted wisdom teeth as soon as possible. Once a problem is detected it is vital to deal with it as quickly as possible. Patients may want to check with family and friends to find the best doctors in their area. Most dental insurance policies will cover this type of work, but it is important to check that with the company before beginning the work.
