Why Building Muscle Is Easier Than Most People Think

By Russ Howe

As a personal trainer it's easy to read the things in fitness publications and wonder why so many people are lost when it comes to figuring out how to build muscle in the gym. The truth is it's needlessly over complicated. Today we'll be showing you the basic rules to help put you on the right track.

Furthermore, we'll write today's article in our trademark jargon-free style to ensure nothing gets lost in translation!

As a fitness instructor I think that the number one problem in the fitness business is poor communication. For some strange reason, many trainers feel they need to give themselves a pat on the back for their knowledge by needlessly making fitness out to be some kind of rocket science. By over complicating every little detail they lose their clients in the shuffle and the fact is they cannot get results because they don't know what their trainer is talking about half the time. In today's article you'll get no jargon, enjoy it.

So if you're goal is to pack on lean size you're in the right place. The following rules will help you.

The first rule is sleep. If you fail to get enough sleep you'll be holding yourself back without even realizing it. That's the thing with these rules, they're a lot simpler than you think. Many of them, including this rule, are things you can literally correct right now. Try to get around eight hours of sleep each night whenever possible.

Supplementing the fact that your sleeping is now in perfect working order for gains in the gym you should now be looking to ensure your body is getting enough rest. You can't grow if your don't let it happen, after all. The next time you see somebody training every day and wondering why they aren't seeing results you'll know why it's happening. Don't let it happen to you.

By the time you actually hit the gym you'll already be on your way to improving your results if you apply the first two rules. When you get to the gym you need to lose the silly approach of not really focusing on any particular type of training. In order to enjoy maximum hypertrophy (growth) you need to aim for eight-to-twelve repetitions in order to get best results. It's a system you cannot go wrong with.

In terms of which exercises work best the basics are all you really need. We need to put the focus on compound movements such as bench press, squat and shoulder press in order to stimulate maximum growth from all the major muscle groups. There is little point spending 25 minutes working the forearm when you could do a full intense workout in that time.

Diet is also critical. Incredibly, most guys assume they can just drink a protein shake and it'll be sufficient. It will not, of course. We're sure that when you say you wish to build a bigger physique you don't mean piling on the weight and becoming fat. Your diet needs to reflect your goals no matter whether you're trying to lose weight or add lean mass.

If you've been sat there wondering how to build muscle and finding that every time you try to find the answer you get lost in the conflicting advice and confusion which is prominent in the fitness world you now have the basic rules to success. These rules will help you to reach your goals and, better still, you didn't have to pay a personal trainer!

Kettlebells Vs Dumbbells - Which Method Returns Best Results?

By Russ Howe

It's a war which has raged on for the best part of ten years but, thanks to recent scientific research, today you will get a definite answer to the question: Kettlebells vs dumbbells - which method will give you the best results?

While it's not uncommon to meet individuals who swear blindly that following one protocol is the best way to build muscle and lose body fat, the general consensus is that the optimal results can be achieved through a varied combination of both methods as well as lesser known styles, including resistance bands and suspension trainers.

In an attempt to draw a line in the sand between warring gym enthusiasts who swear by one approach or the other, scientists from California State University, Fullerton recently drew up a study where they could directly compare strength improvements between the two styles.

In the study, researchers ordered their first group of subjects to perform a six week course of swings, goblet squats and accelerated swings using a 35 pound weight. Improvements of squat ability, vertical leap and power clean strength were documented.

Group B, on the other hand, were made to follow a six week program using roughly 80% of their one repetition maximum on squat, power clean and high pulls using a barbell.

The results clearly showed that the free weight group enjoyed much greater gains in strength than the kettlebell group. First of all, the barbell/dumbbell group noticed a massive increase in their squat strength of 15%, as well as an increase in power clean strength of 10% and a vertical leap boost of 4%.

The other group, meanwhile, only enjoyed a 5% increase in squat strength, with a 4% boost to their power clean and, somewhat surprisingly, only a 1% increase in their vertical leap strength. The last statistic in particular is quite interesting, given that this piece of kit is often touted as the superior method for increasing explosive movements, such as vertical leaping...

These results clearly document that free weights return superior strength gains overall.

However, this would be ill-advisable. A combination of various different techniques is the key to finding a well balanced, progressive training program which gives you a continuous plethora of new results. By limiting yourself to one training style, you are waving goodbye to various other techniques you could have picked up if you were only a bit more open-minded.

While free weights have now been shown to trump other equipment in the strength category, that doesn't mean they are the only method you should use. For instance, there are a number of exercises which can be performed using a kettlebell which are simply more functional than using conventional dumbbells and barbells. The swing is a perfect example of that.

If you merely wanted a straight answer to the kettlebells vs dumbbells question then you certainly have that now, but the best approach to building a well-rounded training program comes from combining aspects of both.

HCG Diet Research Update

By Dr. Elizabeth Clark

PubMed, the medical database at the National Institutes of Health, lists an all-time total of 20,489 research articles on hCG as of May, 2013. Only 93 of these pop up when searching the database for 'hcg' and 'weight loss' together. Over the past 10 years, the numbers are 5,341 and 33, respectively. Of those 33, none are actual studies of the hCG diet itself. This is clearly not a high priority in the research community.

Nevertheless, one recent study stands out, and does not even get listed in the above search on hCG and weight loss. The reason is because it focuses on the changes in certain cardiovascular risk factors that accompany weight loss. The hCG diet just happened to be the protocol used for achieving weight loss. The full reference data for this study are as follows:

Mikirova NA, Casciari JJ, Hunninghake RE, Beezley MM. Effect of weight reduction on cardiovascular risk factors and CD34-positive cells in circulation. Int J Med Sci. 2011;8(6):445-52.

The study was designed to follow the Simeons protocol for the hCG diet, with a few changes, as follows:

1) Meals totaling 500 calories per day, consisting of: breakfast of coffee/tea with no sugar or one fruit serving, with lunch and dinner each comprising of 3.5 oz of lean protein, a vegetable serving, a bread serving, and a fruit serving; 2) Oral supplements consisting of the following nutrients: 250 mg tyrosine, 2 mg beta-glucan, 200 mcg selenium, 1 mg folic acid, 5 mg iodine, 7.5 mg potassium iodide, 600 mg magnesium, 5 g vitamin D3, 60 mg coenzyme Q10, 150 mg lipoic acid, 340 mg acetyl-L-carnitine, 100 mg vitamin B complex, and a probiotic (2 billion CFU acidophilus with 2 billion CFU bifidus and 109 mg FOS); 3) Daily treatments of hCG nasal spray, at doses of 125 - 180 IU; 4) Daily sublingual treatments by vitamin B12 (1,000 mcg per day).

The experimental schedule was as follows: patients took supplements, B12, and hCG for two days prior to beginning a 36-day very low calorie diet. This period was followed by a 35-day period during which food intake was gradually raised while keeping sugar and starch intake very low. The hCG treatment was stopped at the end of this period.

The most weight loss by any individual was about 37.8 lbs. The least was 5.5 lbs. The authors did not explaine that the greatest losses occurred in those who started out the heaviest.

Moreover, the average decrease in body fat was 12.4 percent. This was accompanied by an average mean decrease of 5.7 percent lean body mass. In other words, the amount of fat loss was more than double the amount lost in lean body mass. This result confirms what Dr. Simeons had already shown more than a half century ago.

Cardiovascular risk indicators also showed a statistically significant improvement in total cholesterol, the ratio of total to HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol. Improvement also occurred in levels of triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, and VLDL cholesterol. The HDL cholesterol levels did not change.

What about those circulating CD34-positive cells? Scientists continually search for new indicators of cardiovascular health besides blood lipids. A relatively new indicator is the production of a cell type that negatively correlates with vascular tissue damage. Damage to cells that help replace such tissue correlates with obesity. As the numbers of such cells decrease, damage increases. A rise in a cell type called CD34-positive cells is thought to be an indicator of improvement of vascular health.

The authors showed how an increase in production of CD34-positive cells correlates with changes in percent body fat. Specifically, there was a strong positive correlation between an increase in this cell type and the percent reduction in body fat. This is the positive result that indicates improved vascular health as percent body fat goes down.

The Benefits Of Buying A Treadmill

By Marla Holowitz

Need For Exercise

With the today's world placing a premium on speed and comfort, health has been put at risk. Exercise is important to burn the excess body fat, lower cholesterol levels and build immunity and stamina. All treadmills come with a speed-adjustment feature. Apart from speed adjustment, most versions let you tune their parts and features to help you realize your fitness goals faster. Variations in treadmill features add excitement to your workouts, making you more inspired to stick to them.

Modern treadmills have many inbuilt workout programs. There's a program for losing weight or endurance strengthening, which you can select before you begin exercising. No need to think about changing your speed and incline while you exercise because the machine does the modifications itself. This can be a gradual increase or in a predetermined mixed pattern.

Some workouts are designed to control heart rate jointly with a heart rate monitor. Either you can hold this monitor or attach it on your body. High-quality treadmills use a chest-strap heart rate monitor to accurately track your heart rate and calories burnt. In other words, it can record your cardiovascular fitness level and the intensity of your exercise routine.

To save time, you can save your preferred workout settings in your treadmill so you don't have to punch them in every time you exercise. This is primarily useful when you share the treadmill with other people. Modern treadmills also have the ability to store your exercise history and past fitness levels, excellent for pacifying your obsessive-compulsive side.

These days, the most high-tech treadmills have the technology called iFit Live. This convenient feature lets say, runners prepare for the next race that will happen in another venue. This piece of technology will help you see how you stand up with other users on different treadmills-maybe even across the world-but also exercising on the same course. Have an iFit Live-compatible treadmill and a reliable Internet connection, and you can try this feature by yourself. Other high-tech features of treadmills include LCD touch screens and music players.

Components Of A Treadmill

The very key of the treadmill is the conveyor belt. This belt goes backwards over rollers, so you need to move forward while adjusting your walk, jog or run to correspond to the speed of the belt and avoid falling off. The belt is fitted into a running deck that stretches into the frame of the treadmill and supports your physique weight. For a more challenging exercise, simply just increase or decrease the angle of the treadmill deck. This increases your workout's level of intensity and adds variety.

Damping elements are positioned under the deck to help in shock absorption. The belt is also cushioned for comfort and ease when you are walking or running on it. It's safe to say the motor, belt, deck, and rollers are every treadmill's body, heart, and soul.

The frames of treadmills may be folded or not. If you will be utilizing the treadmill at home, the foldable model is your best bet. Foldable treadmills, with the deck reaching the arms when folded up, are all about being compact. Observe that the long-lasting foldable treadmills cost more compared to their nonfoldable counterparts. The nonfoldable models are perfect for public use, just like training studios, since they can cope with more consistent usage.

Range Of Treadmills Available

Treadmills are likewise designed with their users under consideration. Get your full money's worth by choosing the treadmill that matches your primary goal and health goal. Bear in mind who will workout on the treadmill and their body weight since some treadmills aren't actually for heavier people. Bring your height into play too when choosing among the treadmill models. Will the treadmill be used by one person only, or will it be a family affair? If the treadmill is for a number of individuals, go with the more strong units that can stand the daily wear and tear.

Wrapping It Up

Simply no home gym is ever complete without having a treadmill. Just before rushing to make a purchase, give consideration to your health, fitness and durability needs, and the features that you will employ often. Throw in the user types, regularity of usage, and purpose into the mixture of selecting the right treadmill for you. Give consideration to your budget as well, and when you find a model that most closely fits those criteria, go for it!
